Cantique des Cantiques III
This piece, third in a suite of five pieces (in progress) inspired by Marc Chagall’s collection of the same name, was commissioned and performed by Fieri Consort at the Brisbane Contemporary Church Music Festival in Australia this August.
The text is from the ‘Song of Songs’, otherwise known as the ‘Song of Solomon’ from the Old Testament, and describes a scenario where the narrator is sleeping, but is inwardly awoken by the advances of her lover:
I sleep, but my hearth waketh
It is my beloved who knocks, saying,
“Open to me, my love, my dove, my undefiled
For my head is filled with dew
And my locks with drops of the night”
Fieri plan to perform the piece a second time at the “Arts By The Sea Festival” in Bournemouth on 3rd October.
